In November 2015 I decided to sign on at the Job Centre, while at a regular meeting with my Job advisor I asked if there were any training courses available. He enquired with colleagues and found the Improving Lives Course, this was a 6 week course which involved 3 days a week comprising of one day at Stream Walk Community Garden, and the other two days in the office at Kent Enterprise House, one of which was to be a training course day.
Whilst on the course I have gained not only valuable experience at the community garden by learning new skills, I also got to meet people who were in the same situation as myself, make new friends and build up my confidence. At the office we learnt to gain and update skills in business and administration, creative thinking, problem solving and also confidence building when working in a team. I also gained accredited certificates in Emergency First Aid at Work, Health and Safety, Manual Handling, and Fire Awareness in the workplace. I learned how to manage my CV in a professional manor and brush up on my interview techniques with mock interviews, while completing job searches.
During my time at KET, I felt that my confidence was growing and my outlook on life had changed, I managed to get a few interviews which I felt that without the help and guidance from KET I may not have got before the Improving Lives Course. I have now managed to secure a full time position with the DWP pending references. I feel that this would not have been possible without the help and support of KET.
I do feel that without the KET Team I still would be unemployed, as they have given me skills to approach job hunting, CV writing, and interviews with more confidence and belief in my skills and abilities, and this has enabled me to gain employment. I feel that I can now approach life and any future job opportunities with more pride in myself.
